Foundation Gala hits the jackpot for worthy causes and good times
The number one thing you need to know for gala and corporate event photography is the finished work should tell the story of the evening — from emotions, to moving speeches on stage, to celebrating the theme. After all, you want to showcase just how much fun your attendees have so even more seats are filled for next year’s program. Fortunately, Housing First Minnesota Foundation always puts on a fantastic event where folks are dressed to the nines and aren’t afraid to support a worthy cause.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Foundation for several years, providing coverage for a number of events, including its annual gala. The Foundation works with trades industry partners to provide transitional housing for Minnesotans facing homelessness, including many area veterans. While I am a contractor hired to document these events I can’t help but get caught up in all the touching firsthand stories shared on stage from those who have experienced the benefits generated by the Foundation. There’s never a dry eye when supporters hear how housing provides dignity and safety to those trying to better their lives.
This year’s gala was held at Quincy Hall Event Center in Northeast Minneapolis and featured a casino theme, including card games and dealers. In addition to hearing from housing beneficiaries, the stage was enlivened by awards and speeches from partners supporting the Foundation mission. The main event, however, was the live and silent auctions that raised funds for meaningful Foundation projects. It was moving to experience the generosity of the association members.
Gala Photographer FAQ
Why should I hire a professional photographer for my gala or event?
Corporate events and nonprofit galas are technically a lot more challenging for photography than many other types of projects. Large, dark rooms and event halls make it difficult to properly light your subject or to capture emotions and movement with a smart phone or consumer-level camera. A pro will have the necessary equipment to properly document your event.
What should I look for in an event photographer?
Be sure to review your photographer’s portfolio before your next big event to ensure they won’t be daunted by the scale or itinerary of what you have planned. Have they done similar work in the past? Don’t be afraid to ask for references.
Can I hire one photographer or will I need more?
It’s best to discuss your event and expectations for finished work with your photographer in advance of your event. They will be able to determine if a second photographer is required or perhaps even a different studio or contractor if they do not offer services for a specific type of photography. For example, candid event coverage is quite different from a red carpet photo station for formal portraits of your guests. With Anthologie I can do both!
How should I use my event photos?
That really comes down to your organization’s goals, but in most cases event photography is used to promote similar projects in the future, increasing registrations and participation. Your images can be used on splash pages, websites, posters and other marketing materials. In addition, you can discuss turnaround timeline with your photographer as well so that you can post high-quality pictures on your social media channels after your event to keep your audience engaged online.
How much does professional event photography cost?
There is no one-size-fits-all solution for event photography. The scale of your project (and how many photographers are needed) in addition to the types of services and even special equipment you may require can impact the bottom line. Pro tip: You may be able to work with your photographer on fees somewhat if your organization is a nonprofit rather than a corporation. There is also always a range of expertise in your market and fees tend to follow the skill level of your photographer. In the Twin Cities you can often expect to pay $150 to $500 per hour for photography coverage of your event. Just be sure to discuss what those fees include ahead of time with your photographer. For example, the rate may or may not include a license to use the photos or it may allow for a certain number of images to use in your promotional materials.
