Wrap up your last-minute gifts with these offerings that support Twin Cities small businesses
I’m sure many of you have reached the proverbial “E” on your fuel tank for what more you can endure in 2020. The idea of standing in queue at a long busy mall checkout may seem more like a nightmare than just part of the charming “holiday spirit” from years past. Not to worry! I’ve got you covered if you’re stilling looking for last-minute gift ideas. Plus, you can feel good about these options as all support Minnesota businesses that could really use some extra love this year.
So sit back, grab your favorite, locally produced cocoa bomb and prepare to finish your shopping without fear of standing a bit too close for comfort in those big box stores. And remember, 2021 is only a few days away! I wish you all health and togetherness in the new year.
1. Cubles. It doesn't get more Minnesotan than Paul Bunyan, right? Check out these cute, educational paper crafts from Cubles (pictured above), based in the Twin Cities. These toys are sustainable and stimulate the imagination — without screen time. They have a ton of great designs and require no scissors, glue or tools of any kind. And if the kiddos get bored, the materials that make up Cubles are completely recyclable.
2. Massage Therapy. This year has been difficult to say the least and months of stress can take a heavy toll on our bodies. This holiday season I’m sure just about everyone on your shopping list would benefit from a massage! Now through Dec. 24 Carol Frey, Burnsville massage therapist, is offering $10 off every massage gift card you purchase! These would make a great stocking stuffer and may be used at any time.

3. Fine wood creations. For that person on your list that is so hard to shop for check out the custom work from @duckhillworkshop, such as this handmade cheese board in black walnut (don't you just want to touch the grain?) 🌳 🧀 Duck Hill Workshop has a range of products available and ready to ship - from small cutting boards to coffee tables, and live edge lumber. They are also available to custom work. If that wasn't enough incentive, all of the material for their pieces comes from wood salvaged in Minnesota and Wisconsin, not harvested sources.
4. Upcycled Jewelry. Do you really want to have a positive impact this holiday season? Consider supporting a local artist. I can personally attest to the fact that when you buy original work from an artist they do a little happy dance inside (or IRL!). Plus, locally owned businesses recycle a much larger share of their revenue back into the local economy — win, win! Right now there is a great opportunity to choose from inspired work (such as the upcycled jewelry by @lawrenzjewelry featured in the photo above) from more than 20 area artisans at Fine Craft Collective in downtown Northfield. 5. Photo Session E-Gift Cards. I do think a professional profile photo created by yours truly would be a valuable gift for yourself this holiday season, but also for a fun little thought experiment I challenge you to think about how this one image may impact a number of area businesses in a positive way. First, there's the obvious one: I get a sale from the photography session. Then there's the Über driver who chauffeured my subject to his photo location. There's the local men's store that helped William with his wardrobe selection to set the right tone for his professional image, a stylist that give him a recent trim. After the session, William stayed in the area to meet some business associates; they may have stopped at a local coffee shop ... the list goes on. And what's most important is that when you shop local much more of the money stays in the area to bolster even more small business owners.
