High school senior Justin shows off his personality with his pictures

As I gear up for the 2014 high school senior portrait season (scary, I know) I thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of my favorite photo sessions from last fall.

Justin's session sticks out in my mind for many reasons, but mainly because his pictures turned out so well. I won't be the first or the last to say that for young men entering their last year of high school the idea of posing in front of the camera isn't high on their priority list. Guys would rather be hanging with their friends as much as possible, so often being with a parent chaperone and trying different outfits pretty much ranks up there with getting your wisdom teeth removed.

And since our photo sessions tend to be a bit on the long side (most are 2 to 3 hours), I can always imagine the guys' eyes rolling into the back of their heads when we discuss locations for portraits in our email communications. That extra time, however, allows one to get comfortable and relax more in front of the camera. It also means having the time to try just about anything during the session. In Justin's case that meant finding a spot with a track, a basketball court and a more city-looking environment. We figured downtown Northfield, MN perfectly fit the bill.

Since Justin is infatuated with basketball (to put it lightly), we were able to arrange some time on the court during the session as well as on the track since he's runs varsity for the Proctor High School track and field team. And with the added time, we still had time for the more formal portraits sure to please Justin's mom.

It's hard to believe looking at the finished photos that Justin is only in high school, right? He seriously looks like he could be a model. What do you all think? Please comment or share using the links below.

Anthologie is movin' on up!

Please excuse our dust. Anthologie is moving even closer to you! As of March 17, 2010, Anthologie will no longer be based out of our offices and gallery at 18 Bridge Square in Northfield. We're moving 20 miles north to make it easier than before to meet face to face with our clients. So why the move? About one year ago, Anthologie embarked on a journey to operate in historic downtown Northfield. From the beginning, the venture was a test to see how we can best serve you — our clients. With a year lease on our building, the storefront would serve akin to a business incubator. While it has certainly been fun and a worthwhile learning experience, we've discovered the move mostly serviced our egos rather than the needs and desires of our client base. Anthologie, since its inception, has been dedicated to documenting your life's moments — both large and small — as they happen. That means we come to you on your terms, meeting and working at locations that make sense and are most convenient to you. Thus, our gallery and offices aren't necessary to provide you with the service you've come to expect from Anthologie. We're excited to bring you a new home showroom in the coming weeks for those clients who still desire to see our larger product offerings in a relaxed and realistic environment. More on these changes is coming soon.

Just a walk in the park

One hour outdoors undoubtedly earns Ryan a father-of-the-year award

When we first announced our "No Foolin'" promotion to coincide with the official launch of theanthologie.com we figured we'd might get some great images, but didn't bank on great stories, too. Our sessions were set for only one hour to introduce prospective clients to the Anthologie concept and photography style - not enough time to tell of any substantive events. Or so we thought.

Our final client to reserve his session decided to take full advantage of our approach -- not overly orchestrated and ready to document on the fly -- and completely surprise his wife. We learned what a caring and dedicated father he is in the process.

Ryan's plan was simple: While his wife went off for a day of shopping, he'd take the boys out for a walk, have us photograph the outing, bring the boys back and have some emotive photographs made in time for Mother's Day. We one-upped him and designed a book highlighting the session. Ryan was thrilled with the design and we worked swiftly to ensure the final product, a personalized hardcover coffetable book, was published and delivered in time for Mother's Day - all the while, his wife had no idea the boys had even been photographed. The book was completed in time for Mom to have quite the surprise Mother's Day morning.

We had a wonderful time hanging out with Ryan and his boys and I'm sure the entire family with cherish this exciting time for years to come (his youngest is only three months old). Congratulations, Ryan! Be sure to let us  know if you'd like to earn another award next year!

The big picture

Anthologie gallery begins to take form

With every new home it takes awhile before the personality of its owners is reflected in the interior. John and I finally had the opportunity to show a bit more of who we are by installing some of our favorite Anthologie images yesterday at 18 Bridge Square, Northfield.

The four massive giclees (38×38 inches each) welcome all who enter our new headquarters and take the viewer on a journey through a piece of life’s continuum, beginning with our favorite baby, Logan, and finishing with our favorite bride and groom, Philip and Virginia.

John and I are thrilled with the lush black ink quality of the prints and the immediate impact of each composition. And the crystal clear LED lighting is the perfect (and most efficient) accent. We were able to get the prints installed just in time for Northfield’s Girls Nite Out.

The rain did put a damper on our original plan to offer complimentary mini lifestyle sessions to the Girls Nite Out participants. However, despite the rain, John and I were able to make some great connections with the visitors who did stop by to check out our work and see what Anthologie is all about.
